Bio: Visionary beauty professional and entrepreneur Emily Hankemeier is the founder and team leader of Grow Salon + Wine Bar, a full-service salon that also offers restaurant quality wines by the glass and bottle. With Grow Salon + Wine Bar, Emily has created a beautiful space where customers come for expert cuts, color and styling in a uniquely relaxing atmosphere. Working and living by her golden rule to always put people before profits, Emily subsidizes salon profits with wine sales, a decision that allows her highly trained staff to enjoy greater flexibility and better living. Emily’s perseverance and ingenuity recently earned her a Bronze award in the Best of Georgetown Contest and over $1,000,000 in sales during the salon’s first year, despite setbacks like the pandemic. And it’s no surprise. Grow Salon + Wine Bar incorporates 3,200 feet of bright, clean space—including an open-air lounging section. Service stations are also positioned 10+ feet apart—well above industry standard— to further enhance the comfort and safety of everyone.
An artist and a perfectionist through and through, Emily has been a successful self-employed hairstylist for over 16 years. Known for her attention to detail and obsession with healthy hair, she’s worked as a nationally requested educator for several professional beauty brands and trained 55 hairdressers and counting. These skills combined with genuine business acumen have also enabled her to successfully own and run several commission, rental and suite salons since she was 20 years old. In fact, Emily’s very first salon was recognized for best design from both Peter Millard and Redken. Before earning her cosmetology license, Emily studied interior design at the University of North Texas—experience she continues to draw on today when planning salon spaces.
Though no path to success is easy, Emily is grateful to be in a position where she’s able to make customers feel great about themselves while also facilitating the dreams of fellow professionals. When she’s not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, children and 12 pet tarantulas. She also likes winemaking, rowing and cycling.
